The most interested people at the Leake Academy vs. D'Iberville State Games fast-pitch softball game might very well have been the team and fans of Oak Grove-based X-Treme Heat.
As long as D'Iberville won and Leake scored at least two runs, the gold medal would belong to X-Treme Heat as it, D'Iberville, and New Albany would all finish 2-1 overall and 1-1 against each other. The gold would go to X-Treme Heat on the basis of the tiebreaker formula.
That scenario played out as D'Iberville knocked off Leake 11-2. D'Iberville took the silver medal with New Albany taking the bronze. Leake finished 0-3.
Getting enough girls to play fast-pitch in the summer hasn't been a problem for the champions.
X-Treme Heat opened with a 14-4 win over Leake as Amanda Jones had a double and a triple. Jill Wedgeworth and Logan James both had two singles, Leah Kilpatrick had a triple, and Meghan James had a double.
New Albany knocked off D'Iberville 7-6 as Mallory Sanford doubled home Staranna Frazier with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
D'Iberville beat X-Treme Heat 8-3 as Allyson Taylor had a single and a double, Stephanie Ratcliff had two singles, and Jessica Lawrence and Tiffany Brosh both had a triple. Shelley Berry had a double and a triple for X-Treme Heat.
X-Treme Heat blasted New Albany 15-0 as Meghan James went 4-for-4 with a double. Amanda Jones had a single and a double, Summer Clark had two singles, and Jill Wedgeworth added a double.
