In sports, everybody wants to win on the scoreboard. But longtime Southeast Lauderdale High School coach and teacher Larry Etheridge said some of life's lessons are even more important. "The most important thing I tried to teach the kids over the years was to be people with good character and good morals," said Etheridge, who is retiring this year after 30 years of coaching. "Wins and losses are not necessarily the most important thing. I want them to become good people and to trust in the Lord." A native of Franklin County, Etheridge came to Southeast Lauderdale as head football and baseball coach 28 years ago. The job has changed over the years, and he has worn many hats. For the past 14 years, he was defensive coordinator for Coach Dwane Taylor, and during the past 11 years, he was the head baseball coach.
ROSEMONT, Ill. The NFL realigned itself quickly and amicably Tuesday, skipping the squabbling of the past and leaving even the uprooted teams saying they were satisfied. Five of the new divisions will have basically the same makeup, and the most drastic step is moving Seattle from the AFC West to the NFC West. What was best for the league, as it turned out, was a relatively painless shift to eight four-team divisions for 2002, when Houston will rejoin the league as an expansion franchise in the same division as Tennessee, which left Houston after the 1996 season. The Seahawks made a token argument against the shift but said afterward they were delighted. They must have been the vote was unanimous.

STARKVILLE Brad Freeman's RBI single in the seventh inning provided the go-ahead run as host Mississippi State came from behind to defeat Ohio State 8-5 in the NCAA Mideast Regional on Thursday night. Mississippi State (42-18) opened the seventh inning with three straight hits consecutive doubles by Adam Piatt and Damian Scioneaux preceding Freeman's single that made it 6-5. Bulldogs starting pitcher Eric DuBose (8-3) overcame one bad inning, a five-run Ohio State fourth, by allowing just one base runner the rest of the game.

MONTREAL Tom Runnells of the Montreal Expos today became the first major league manager fired this year and was replaced by Felipe Alou, the team's bench coach. Alou became the third minority manager in the majors and the second with a son on his own team. The other minority managers are Hal McRae of the Kansas City Royals and Cito Gaston of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tristan Howell
Lamar School will be searching for a new boys basketball coach following the resignation of Tristan Howell.
Howell, a graduate of Mississippi State University, has accepted a coaching job at Parklane Academy in McComb.
He will coach both varsity and junior high boys basketball and will also be an assistant coach on the girls fast-pitch softball team,
At Lamar, Howell coached the Raiders junior high and varsity basketball teams. He also was the head coach for the girls softball team.
The Lady Raiders went 9-14 and had one player in catcher Summer Richie earn a scholarship to play at East Central Community College.
Howell said he enjoyed his time at Lamar.
Howell is a graduate of Leake Academy.
