JACKSON  If you want to vote in the June 4 party primaries, you must register by Friday, according to Secretary of State Eric Clark.
U.S. Senator Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is unopposed for the Republican Party nomination for another term.
The Republican Party will conduct a primary election in the 2nd Congressional District between Clinton LeSueur of Greenville and Charlotte Reeves of Jackson. The Democratic Party will conduct a primary election in the 2nd Congressional District between U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson and George Irvin of Jackson.
The Democratic Party will conduct a statewide primary election on June 4 to choose the party's nominee for U.S. Senate. Candidates will be James "Bootie" Hunt of Starkville and Steven Turney of Bassfield.
There are no congressional primaries in the 1st, 3rd or 4th congressional districts.
Offices scheduled for election this fall are one U.S. Senator post, all four U.S. House of Representatives posts, five Court of Appeals Judges (one from each district), all Chancery and Circuit Court Judges, County and Family Court Judges, some county school board member posts, and some Levee Commissioner positions.
One Supreme Court election is scheduled to be held (Southern District-Post 1) contingent on U.S. Justice Department approval of a new law allowing appointed Justices to complete unexpired terms in some cases. Some counties may also hold special elections.
Under the Nonpartisan Judicial Election Act of 1994, candidates for judicial office (other than Justice Court Judge) do not run in party primaries. Their names will appear on the general election ballot on Nov. 5. Judicial runoff elections will be held, if necessary, Nov. 19.
