Meridian takes win over Bossier Parish
Meridian Community College took a 7-2 win over Bossier Parish Monday in women's junior college tennis action.
In singles action MCC won all six matches. Charlotte Heidelberg beat Lori Russell, 6-0, 6-4; Megan Chivas beat Milena Gueorguieva, 6-1, 6-2; Amanda Carden beat Devon Whitmore, 6-2, 6-2; Anna Bailey shut down Denada Dirba, 6-0, 6-0; Casie Joyner beat Marte Webb, 6-0, 6-1; and Jill Hathorn beat Twanna Russell, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Meridian was not so lucky in doubles action picking up only one win. MCC's Heidelberg and Chivas downed Russell and Whitmore by a score of 8-0. Bossier's Gueorguieva and Russell defeated MCC's Cardena and Bailey, 8-6 while Bossier's Dibra and Webb beat Hathorn and Joyner, 8-2.
Meridian is now 6-5-1 on the season.

UWA picks up first no-hitter since 1991
LIVINGSTON, Ala. Kevin Long, Jason Clark and Justin Maddox combined for the first West Alabama no-hitter since 1991, as the Tigers swept a pair from LeMoyne-Owen (13-15) in Tuesday evening baseball action (5-1, 14-0). Long went two innings in game two, allowing no runs on no hits, while striking
out five to pick up his first win of the year.
Martin Jackson led the way for the Tigers in game one, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Walt Simmons added a hit and a pair of RBI, while Freddie Vazquez contributed a 1-for-3 performance with two runs scored and one RBI. Brodie Meadows, Brooks Tinsley and LeWayne Allen rounded out the Tiger hitters with one hit apiece.
Robbie LaCoste pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, to pick up the game one win and move his record to 1-0 on the year.
Carlin Homan paced the UWA offense in game two, going 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Allen turned in another solid game, picking up one hit, one run and one RBI. Scott Merkich and Randal Minton added a hit and one RBI each, while Tinsley contributed a 1-for-1 night with one RBI.
The Tigers move to 15-24 overall on the year and remain 5-4 in GSC play. West Alabama returns to action on Saturday when they travel to North Alabama for the first two games of a three-game set with the first-place Lions.

Simmons grabs Player of Week honors
LIVINGSTON, Ala. Following a week that saw him hit .611, West Alabama senior Walt Simmons has been named GSC East Division Player of the Week for the period ending April 1. Simmons helped fuel a 4-2 week that moved the Tigers
to 5-4 in Gulf South Conference, currently alone in fourth.
Simmons, a native of West Point, Miss., came to West Alabama from Oak Hill Academy, and has been a mainstay in the UWA lineup since. He holds several school records, including career doubles (53), career home runs (37) and
career hit by pitch (43).
He went 11-for-18 over the six-game stretch beginning on Tuesday. In the 11 hits, Simmons picked up four doubles one home run and nine RBI.
The senior also posted a lofty 1.06 slugging percentage and was a perfect 2-of-2 in stolen bases. His five RBI in the closer with Henderson State pushed the Tigers to a 15-9 win. West Alabama would go on to take two out of three from number-five ranked Valdosta State over the weekend.

East Mississippi sweeps Northeast
Jessica Vaughn pounded out a three run homerun in the first inning of game one as East Mississippi took two key division wins over Northeast on Monday in Scooba. EMCC won the first game by a final of 11-1. Denitta Quinn led the way for the Lady Lions with a 3-for-3 performance. Vaughn went 2-for-3 as did Kayla Murphy, Shannon Brown, and Keely Rutledge. Constance Logan was 3-for-4.
East took game two by a final of 8-3. Quinn once again had a 3-for-3 showing at the plate, while Murphy was 3-for-4, which included a triple. Rutledge and Cora McDuffy went 2-for-3. With the sweep, East Mississippi stands atop the MACJC North Division. The Lady Lions will host Jones on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

DSU's Dillard earns national honor
CLEVELAND Delta State University third baseman Andy Dillard was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday.
The junior from Saltillo went 9-for-15 (.600) with five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs in a three-game series sweep of seventh ranked Southern Arkansas. In Friday's doubleheader, he was 7-for-10 with three home runs (one being a grand slam) and 16 RBI. The Statesmen scored 68 runs on 69 hits in the series.

Statesmen move to top of poll
CLEVELAND Delta State University moved into the number one spot in Collegiate Baseball Newspapers Top 30 poll on Monday. The Statesmen, who were previously ranked third, have a 27-3 overall record and are 12-1 in the GSC.
Following DSU are Kennesaw State, Cal State-Chico, Central Missouri, and Central Oklahoma. North Florida, Valdosta State, Columbus State, Florida Southern and Alabama-Huntsville round out the top 10. Delta State returns to action with a doubleheader against Millsaps College on Thursday at noon. The Statesmen play a doubleheader against Grambling University at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Ferriss Field.

Quitman Country Club hosting tourney
Quitman Country Club will hold a Red, White and Blue Golf Tournament April 13. Tee time will be 9:30 for the 27 hole tournament. The tournament will be scramble, 4 ball, alternate shot with two person teams. The entry fee is $40 per person and a lunch will be included. Basketball, cheerleader tryouts set
East Mississippi Community College at Scooba will hold tryouts for its women's basketball team on April 10 at 3 p.m. in the Keyes Currie Coliseum. For more information, contact Lady Lions coach Dale Peay at 662-476-5030.
EMCC will hold cheerleader tryouts on April 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Keyes Currie Coliseum. A clinic will be held on April 17 at 3 p.m. for anyone interested in trying out. Only those who attend the clinic will be permitted to participate in the tryouts. Students will be judged on cheer, chant, dance and two jumps. Back handsprings or back tucks are not required but are encouraged.
