Robin Ford of Meridian is the first recipient of the George Howell M.D. Nursing Scholar Award at Meridian Community College.
Ford, a sophomore, will receive $600 to cover tuition for her final semester of study. The scholarship is funded through the MCC Foundation by the Howell Endowment, established by Tile Howell as a memorial tribute to her husband.
Ford is a single mother of three children. She works at Rush Foundation Hospital and is active in her church.
SCOOBA Thirty-two East Mississippi Community College students were inducted into the Eta Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honorary society, during a special ceremony March 7.
Students from the Scooba campus, Naval Air Station Meridian extension and Columbus Air Force Base extension participated in the ceremony.
Area students who were inducted include: Lyndall Wood and Cheryl Beaty, both of Scooba; Randi Little of Collinsville; Keely Rutledge of Bailey; Andrew Pilgrim, David Smith, Kelvin Monroe and George Spinks all of DeKalb; Mike Snider of Meridian; and Meridian Naval Air Station inductees Darin Burgoyne and Dawn Manning.
During the ceremony, some PTK members were recognized for their achievements including Morgan McPhail of Collinsville, who is the recipient of the international Guistwhite Scholarship and who has been chosen for the All USA First Academic Team.
Also recognized was Melanie Key of DeKalb, who has been chosen for the All USA Second Academic Team.
ELMHURST, Ill. Laura Deschamps of Meridian was recently named to the dean's list for the fall term of the 2001-2002 academic year at Elmhurst College.
The dean's list is comprised of students with at least a 3.75 grade-point average or who, at the end of the term, have attained at least a cumulative 3.5 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Brock Martin, the son of Mary Justus of Meridian, a senior biology and psychology major at Birmingham Southern College, has been listed in the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 2002.
Leah Nicole Williams of Meridian recently won first place in public speaking at the Mississippi Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference in Jackson.
She will represent Mississippi in public speaking at the National Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference set for June 23-26 in Nashville.
Williams was also is listed in Who's Who in Phi Beta Lambda for outstanding achievements.
Phi Beta Lambda is a national education association of members preparing for careers in business.
Williams is a senior accounting major at the University of Southern Mississippi. She is the daughter of Bill and Martha Williams of Meridian.
Members of the Newton County High School Scrapbook Committee placed second at the state Beta Club convention. The group will compete at the national convention in Orlando, Fla., in June.
