PITTSBURGH Mississippi State hadn't played a basketball game in Pennsylvania since the 1937-38 season. After Monday's success against Pittsburgh, the Bulldogs may not want to wait so long to visit again. Michael Gholar and Derrick Zimmerman mad 3-point shots in the final 1:10 to help Mississippi State beat Pittsburgh 66-61 in a second round game of the National Invitational Tournament.
Jack Combest and Johnny Boykin fired a second-day total of 61 Sunday and captured the championship of the Mississippi Golf Association Early Bird Scramble at Briarwood Country Club. Combest and Boykin finished with a two-day total of 123, shooting a 62 Saturday.

DECATUR It's a good thing Ray Ivey brought his fielding glove to the ballpark Wednesday night. Ivey made only his second appearance of the year for East Central CC, shutting down Three Rivers (Mo.) in 5 1/3 innings of relief. After ECCC pitchers Seth Hebert and Rusty Cumberland gave up seven runs in the first inning, Ivey trotted over from first base to the mound. He was flawless. The sophomore from Louisville gave up just two hits and three walks in just over five innings. He struck out three, picking up his first win of the season, as the Warriors (18-4) claimed a 17-7 come-from-behind victory over Three Rivers (6-1).
Jim McMahon, the free spirit quarterback who led the Chicago Bears to the 1986 Super Bowl title, is walking away from the NFL with no other plans than to spend time with his family and play golf. McMahon, who threw only four passes last season as a backup with Super Bowl champion Green Bay, said he informed Packers coach Mike Holmgren of the decision earlier this week.

DECATUR The Newton County Academy Generals remained unbeaten with a 9-4 victory Thursday over the visiting Kemper Academy Rams. The victory left the Generals with an early season 5-0 record while the Rams dropped to 3-3 with their second loss of the season to the Newton bunch. Mike Hurst went the distance on the mound for the Generals and is now 1-0, while Jason Gully, the first of two hurlers for the Rams, took the loss and is 0-1.
Johnny Fair scattered seven hits, as Winston Academy got six runs in the top of the second and cruised to a 12-4 win over Heritage in area prep baseball action Thursday. Clay Curtis was 3-for-4 to lead the Patriots. Winston also got 2-hit games from Chris Hitt, Shay Taylor, Greg Wright, Jay Nichols, Jay Garner and Fair. Winston banged out 15 hits as a team.
