MCC Lady Eagles are leaders

Several members of the undefeated Meridian Community College women's basketball team rank among the leaders in the NJCAA Division I individual statistics.
Cantea Brown ranks 24th in scoring with a 16.3 average. Janis Beal of Northwest College leads the nation with a 23.2 per game scoring clip. Maria Vallaroel of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College is second at 23.0.
Brown ranks 10th nationally in rebounding, averaging 10.6 per game. Evena Morency of Miami-Dade is the leader at 13.6. Christy Brown of Copiah-Lincoln is fifth, averaging 13.3 boards.
MCC's Monique Horner is second nationally in assists at 9.4, trailing only LaShonda Denmon of Chattanooga State at 9.6.
Horner is also 23rd in steals at 3.2. She actually trails teammate Genice Terry, who averages 4.2 swipes to hold eighth place nationally.
Co-Lin's Tirania Burns is 25th in free-throw percentage at 80 percent after making 28 of her 35 attempts. Sarah Costello of Seminole State College leads the nation at 94.7 percent, making 54 of 57. Brittany Crouch of New Mexico Junior College is second at 93.5 percent, 43-of-46.

National tournaments set
The NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship is slated for March 19 at Salina, Kan., with the Division I Men's Basketball Championship set to begin that same day at Hutchinson, Kan.
The Division II Women's Basketball Championship is scheduled to begin on March 20 at Hagerstown, Maryland, with the Division II Men's Basketball Championship on tap for Danville, Ill., on March 20.

Woods ranks third in scoring
Northeast Mississippi Community College's Qyntel Woods is the No. 3 scorer in the NJCAA Division I men's individual statistics. Woods, a 6-foot-9, 210-pound freshman from Carver High School in Memphis, is averaging 27.2 points per game for the Tigers.
Leading the nation in scoring is Prentice Mobley of Florida Community College with a 29.7 scoring clip. Janovor Weatherspoon of Odessa (Texas) College is second at 27.5 ppg.

These military boys can shoot
Marion Military Institute has a powerful 1-2 scoring punch on the court this year.
Maurice Simon and Kendrick Johnson are tied for eighth place among the NJCAA Division I men's basketball players in scoring as they both average 23.9 points per contest.
Amazingly, MMI has already played 22 games this season.
Johnson leads the nation in rebounding at 16.9 per game. Andre Amos, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Northwest Mississippi Community College is 17th with an 11.0 average.
Damon Francis of Cincinnati State leads the nation in assists with an incredible 16.0 average.
Three players are tied for the lead in free-throw percentage. Rocky Collum of Kankakee Community College, Josh Naylor of Northern Oklahoma College, and Corey English of South Suburban College all stood at 95.5 percent after making 21 of their 22 tries from the charity stripe.

MCC ready for some home action
After playing on the road for most of the first-half of the season the men's and women's basketball teams of Meridian Community College will play a majority of their January games at home.
Six of the nine January games for the MCC men will be at the Ivy Sports Center, while the women will play five of their seven scheduled games on their home court. The men returned to action on Monday when Alabama Southern pays a visit for a 7 p.m. game, while the women begin play on Jan. 10 when the Eagles and Lady Eagles travel to Scooba to face East Mississippi Community College.
The men and women host Southwest Tennessee on Jan. 19, Northeast Mississippi on Jan. 22 and Miss-Lou Conference foe Southern Shreveport on Jan. 26, while the women squeeze in a game with Wallace-Hanceville on Jan. 24.
Then, after the men travel to Ellisville to take on Jones County on Jan. 28, there are five more straight home dates. For the women it means eight consecutive home games, while the men will play five-of-six at home.

EMCC plans Red and Black' Night
SCOOBA East Mississippi Community College is hosting "Red and Black" night this Thursday. The Lady Lions and Lions will take on Meridian Community College at the Keyes Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus. The women's game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. A portrait of former EMCC coach Keyes Currie will be unveiled in between the games, which will honor coach Currie for his 38 years of service to the school.
