Gulfport National Guard unit activated
GULFPORT (AP) Members of Gulfport's Air National Guard's 255th Air Control Squadron will travel to Texas Friday morning in support of the homeland defense mission Operation Noble Eagle.
About 50 members of the 255th are to provide an operationally ready control and reporting center in support of air operations and emergency contingencies, Lt. Col. Tim Powell said in a statement.
The unit is scheduled to complete its mission in Texas and return to Gulfport in approximately two months.
The activation of the Gulfport unit is the state's second call-up of National Guard troops. On Tuesday some 100 members of Meridian's 186th Air Refueling Wing were called to duty.
