Newton County takes fast-pitch pair

The Newton County Lady Cougars blanked the Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes 10-0 in fast pitch softball action Saturday.
April Bufkin struck 10 batters and hurled a two-hitter to improve to 4-0. Bufkin, Kristin Chaney, Stephanie Airhart, Betsy Clark and Joy Cavenaugh all recorded two hits, while Dominique Mapp had a triple for the Lady Cougars.
Jennie Battle was charged with the loss for Philly.
NCHS (7-0) will compete in the Clarkdale Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
In a game from late Thursday, the Lady Cougars also blanked the Union Lady Yellow Jackets in a division contest. In that game, Bufkin threw a one-hitter and struck out nine.
Clark again had two hits to lead NCHS.
Lindsey Cassel took the loss for Union.
