Two local teachers are among 11 in Mississippi selected as state-level winners in a program that recognizes exceptional teaching abilities in the areas of math and science.
Nettie F. Mayatt, who teaches secondary science at West Lauderdale High School, and Ronnie L. Shumaker, who teaches math at Oakland Heights Elementary School, were named Thursday.
A spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Education said recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching will receive a $750 grant, which must be used to enhance student learning.
The state's finalists will advance to national competition, where winners will receive $7,500 to be used for educational purposes.
The purpose of the program is to increase the status and rewards of demonstrated professionalism, including leadership, in the areas of math and science teaching.
