Patrician and Sumter go down to the wire

It took a half-court shot at the final buzzer to do it, but Patrician Academy pulled out a two-point victory over Sumter Academy Tuesday night.
Sumter led 23-17 at the end of the first quarter, but Patrician fought back for a 38-37 lead at halftime before eventually taking the 71-69 decision.
Sumter, which fell to 5-7 on the year, was led by Shane Martin with 19 points. Chase Schroeder added 17 points, Tucker Spidle had 15, John Upchurch 10 and Joseph Hoggle eight.
For Patrician, Jason Etheridge scored 26 points, Jordan May had 18, John David Correlson 14, Hunter Campbell seven and Justin Irvin six.
Sumter's next game is Friday night at Pickens Academy.
Sumter Academy girls 54, Patrician Academy 51: The roles were reversed in the girls game as Sumter weathered a third quarter rally by Patrician to hold on for the three-point win.
Sumter led by five at halftime, but Patrician outscored the Lady Eagles 16-10 in the third to pull within a point at 36-35 going into the final frame.
The Lady Eagles were too strong down down the stretch though and held on for the win.
Sumter, which improved to 10-1, was led by Amanda Chambless with 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Jess Watkins added 13 points and had six steals, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Patrician, which fell to 9-5, was led by Stephanie Guinn and Brooke Norris with 11 points each.
Newton County Academy boys 56, Kemper Academy 53: The Generals held on for the three-point win Tuesday night despite a second-half comeback by the Rams, who suffered their first division loss of the season.
By halftime Newton County Academy had built a 33-18 lead. But Kemper Academy outscored the Generals 35-23 in the second half for the final margin.
Newton County Academy was led by Daniel Champion with 19 points and Jason Frith with 17.
Ty Harbour and Matthew Darnell scored 17 points apiece for Kemper Academy. Eddie Keaton added 11 as the Rams fell to 13-5.
NCA (9-9) plays Friday night at Union Academy.
Newton County Academy girls 53, Kemper Academy 40: Newton County Academy was led by trio of seniors Tuesday night as the Lady Generals defeated the Lady Rams for the fourth consecutive time.
Seniors Brandi Upton and Ashley Callaghan paced the Lady Generals with 14 points apiece and senior Kristen Rice made eight steals and hit three 3-pointers in the win.
The Lady Rams were led by Jessica Harpole with 13 points. Jen Myers and Alicia Dufour had nine points each in the loss.
Southern Choctaw girls 66, Washington County 41: Southern Choctaw improved to 14-3 with a 25-point win over Washington County Tuesday night.
Southern Choctaw was led by Chandelle Pickens with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Monique Henderson with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Tara Pasley with 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Shaykeesha O'Neal pulled down a game-high 22 rebounds for the Lady Indians, as well.
Seminary girls 55, Clarkdale 50: Clarkdale fell to 7-15 with the five-point loss Tuesday.
Jor'Dan Orr led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points. Tamara Brown and Carmelita Naylor each added 11 points.
Seminary was led Vanessa Gibbs with 20 points and Morgan Lott with 16.
Clarkdale boys 52, Seminary 40: The Bulldogs took an early lead and never looked back as they improved to 6-12 Tuesday night with the eight point win in Division 7-2A action.
The one bright spot for Seminary was the performance of Chris Smith, who scored 24 points in the loss.
Anthony Holliday led Clarkdale with 18 points. Richard Matthews added 11, Brandon Mabry 10 and Jamie Followay had nine.
Noxapater Boys 54, Nanih Waiya 34: Noxapater improved to 2-6 with a 20-point win over Nanih Wayia, outscoring the Warriors by nine points in the second and fourth quarters.
J.E. Haynes scored 19 points to lead Noxapater. Joey Bates added 13 and Nijel Young scored six.
Nanih Waiya was led by Brent Blackwell with 17.
Noxapater girls 43, Nanih Waiya 36: Deidre Triplet scored 16 points to lead Noxapater (5-7) to the seven point win over Nanih Waiya.
Tina Robbins and Krystala Foster each scored seven points for Noxapater and Stephanie Blankenship added six.
Nanih Waiya (3-9) was led by Courtnee Graham with 14 points and Paige Sullivan with 13.
Wayne County boys 93, Choctaw County (Ala.) 51: After battling to a 17-17 tie with Choctaw at the end of the first quarter, Wayne County took over.
The War Eagles outscored Choctaw 27-10 in the second period and then blew the game open with a 31-13 outpouring in third.
Wayne County, which improved to 16-2, was led by Dietric Slater with 25 points and Rayford Everett with 11.
The War Eagles play at Northwest Rankin Friday night in a big Division 5-5A contest.
Wayne Co. girls 66, Choctaw Co. (Ala.) 29: The Lady War Eagles jumped out to 29-9 lead after one quarter of play and cruised to the easy victory.
Wayne County, which improved to 16-3, was led by Carla Bartee with 15 points.
Scott Central girls 59, Sebastopol 31: Britney Burks scored 20 points to lead all scorers as Scott Central picked up the 28-point win over its cross-county rivals from Sebastopol.
Elyse Clay added 11 points for Scott Central, Marquita Anderson scored 10 and Katie Nickson had nine.
Sebastopol was led by Brooke Thrash with 12 points.
Kate Griffin 35, Northwest 32: The Wildkittens knocked off the Bulldogs in eighth-grade action.
Jacolby Davis led Kate Griffin with 11 points, while Chris Leggett was tops for Northwest, scoring 10 points in the contest.
Kate Griffin 47, Northwest 42: In ninth-grade action, Kate Griffin was also victorious, picking up the five-point win over cross-town rival Northwest.
Kimone McDade scored 11 points to lead a balanced Kate Griffin attack.
