Red Bay’s varsity baseball team picked up 14 hits that included Troy Bolden’s sixth season home run to overtake the Vina Red Devils 21-6 last Tuesday.

“Considering Vina beat us last year, this was a big win for us,” said Tiger head baseball coach Richard Maggerise.

“That meant a lot to our kids because they know a lot of the Vina boys.

“The fact that we were able to beat them and beat them like we did gave our players a lot of confidence.”

Vina led 2-1 at the end of the first inning, but Red Bay came back to tie the game 3-3 to start the third.

Vina added two runs in the third, but Red Bay took a 13-5 lead after scoring seven runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

The Tigers posted eight more in the sixth for the win.

Chase Allen led Red Bay with four hits. Jade Pounds, Nick Thorn, and Kolby Bragwell had two hits each.

Fred Nethery, Troy Borden, Josh Wilson, and Kaleb Burroughs had one hit each. Borden hit a home run, Thorn hit a triple, and Milam had two doubles.

Burroughs had four runs scored, Nethery and Allen had three each, Milam, Bragwell, Thorn and Wilson had two each, Borden, Pounds, and Hester had one each.

“Coach Hamilton does an unbelievable job with the kids he gets to come out,” Maggerise said.

“He has a team that you’ve got to be ready to play.

“We beat Covenant Christian the Saturday before we played Vina, so that got us on a small roll for the Vina game.”

Vina’s runs were scored by Hester, Wilkinson, Gravitt, Wooten, and Sullivan. Hester, Wooten, and Creekmore had RBIs for the Red Devils.

Red Bay opened area games against Phil Campbell this past Monday and will play Vina again at Red Bay on March 28.
