RFD receives grant

The Russellville’s Fire Department was recently the recipient of a $1,712 grant from the Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council that was used to purchase 115 tamper proof smoke detectors for residents throughout Russellville and Franklin County.
The city fire department and the volunteer fire departments in the county installed the smoke detectors in homes they encountered during routine calls where the residents did not have a working smoke detector in their home.
“We have always participated and provided smoke detectors to our community whenever we encounter someone in need,” Steve Thornton of the Russellville Fire Department said.
“And recently we began to target specific areas where we have seen a high number of injuries and or fire related fatalities.”
Roger Hayes, Board Chairman of the Northwest Alabama RC&D Council, said that RC&D was happy to be able to provide funds for a cause that will make the residents of Franklin County safer. Hayes also expressed his appreciation to Senator Roger Bedford and Representative Mike Johnny Mack Morrow who represent Franklin County and provide support for the RC&D program in the State Legislature.
