RHS gets pounded by Walker
JASPER — Top-ranked Russellville went on the road Friday to face a well-tested Walker team and found out early the Vikings intended to upset the Golden Tigers.
Walker, ranked 10th in Class 5A did just that, scoring early and often to build a big lead and cruise to a 49-28 victory.
The Vikings (4-1, 2-1) scored about two minutes into the game, added another touchdown two minutes later and scored yet again about two minutes after that.
They scored again in the closing seconds of the first quarter to take a 28-0 lead. Walker extended the lead to 35-0 two minutes into the second quarter.
“We didn’t play well,” Russellville coach Doug Goodwin said. “They played a lot faster in the first half. The last time we saw speed like that was probably against Vigor (in the state championship game two years ago).”
Russellville (4-1, 3-0) finally got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard run by Tevin Cross. Jose Betancourt added the point after to reduce the deficit to 35-7.
With 2:58 remaining before halftime, Devan Parker scored for the Golden Tigers on a 10-yard run.
The Vikings scored again to push their advantage to 42-14 at halftime and added another score midway through the third.
Brent Calloway picked up his first touchdown of the night with a 3-yard run late in the third quarter.
Calloway broke lose for a 69-yard touchdown run with 6:04 to play in the game.
“We have to learn from our mistakes and get better,” Goodwin said.
The Golden Tigers return to region action next week when they host J.O. Johnson for homecoming.
