Football look ahead
While a lot of the county is on the road, Tharptown will be hosting a home game. The game of the week will be in Florence as Russellville travels to Mars Hill.
Phil Campbell (1-3) at Carbon Hill (0-4) – After winning their opener against Hackleburg, the Bobcats lost three straight to Lamar County, Elkmont and Colbert County. After a week off, they play Carbon Hill. The Bulldogs have losses to Decatur Heritage, Winston County, Fayette County and Oakman. All but the Winston County game was a shutout. Phil Campbell is heading into competing against Mars Hill and Lauderdale County back to back. The Bobcats won last year 28-0.
Red Bay (3-1) at Hackleburg (3-1) – The Red Bay Tigers rebounded after a road loss to Lexington. The Tigers played their home opener on their new turf field and defeated the Sheffield Bulldogs 50-6 and beat rival Belmont 14-6. Red Bay is back on the road this week at Hackleburg. After dropping their season opener to Phil Campbell, the Panthers had wins over Meek (24-8), Addison (32-28) and Hubbertville (32-21). Red Bay won this game last year 58-24.
Russellville (5-0) at Mars Hill (5-0) – Both teams come into this game undefeated. No team has a clear advantage except the Panthers, who will host the Golden Tigers. Mars Hill beat Russellville by a single point last year 31-30. Russellville has beaten Grissom and Deshler in nonregion competition.The Panthers have beaten Cullman and Brooks out of region.
Tharptown (1-4) hosts Cherokee (3-2) – This year is a little different. Teams like Shoals Christian and Cherokee have significantly improved from last year to this year. The Indians have had wins over Brindlee Mountain, Waterloo and Phillips. They sustained a big loss to Addison and fell to Shoals Christian last week 16-12. Tharptown won this game last year 48-22.
Vina (0-3) at Curry (0-5) – The Yellow Jackets haven’t come close to a win, but the level of competition has been much different. Curry has losses to teams like Cold Springs, Berry, Dora, Northside and Oak Grove. Vina has lost to Addison, Shoals Christian and Woodville. Vina lost this game last year 66-16.
