Hi folks,

Last week I was talking with a person about how our towns of yesteryear were so different from our cities of today. We talked about Russellville, Phil Campbell and several of the old businesses around our county.

He mentioned about how many people would visit this place and how enjoyable it was to see the large crowds that would gather, especially on weekends. The streets were always filled, and everyone had such a great time. He said people appreciate those times so much, and family enjoyed doing things and going to events together.

Mr. Jones made the statement, “I wish things were back just like they used to be.”

Mr. Jones also said merchants appreciated the customers more than they are appreciated today. Mr. Charlie Byrd with A&P Super Market was always friendly and would assist customers with new merchandise that had arrived. Mr. Frank Ozborn, who had the Western Auto, located on main street in downtown Russellville, was always doing his part to sell those Western Flyer Bikes and the new shotguns that he had on display.

I just wonder how many of those shotguns and bikes are still around today.

In Phil Campbell Mr. Isom had a General Merchandise Store, and a lot of folks made their purchases of clothing and other household items from Mr. Isom’s store. Many folks paid their Alabama Power Bill at the Isom’s Store, too.

Many years later, Mr. Ernie Thompson drew a lot of folks to Phil Campbell with his Saturday Night Auction. Ernie sold a lot of merchandise at his auction, and many other folks followed in his footsteps with the Friday Night Auction. I remember Wayne Parker was very successful with the auction that he had on a weekly basis.

Last week I passed a Parker’s Discount Business in Tennessee just north of Lawrenceburg. I’m sure they are still doing well.

It’s wonderful to remember those days, but they are gone. Let’s just hope that in the future, we will see other businesses that will draw folks to our town. No doubt, folks, the universe is unfolding just as the Good Lord planned. Let’s all hope and pray that the future will be bright and healthy.
