Spirit of Hodges Festival returns

It’s time for citizens to get their horseshoes ready for the annual Spirit of Hodges festival Oct. 14.

The Hodges Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting the festival for the 3rd year in a row, and Chief Lesley Cantrell said it’s been a fun time every year. “We enjoy getting to put this on for the community,” he said.

Hill Country will take the stage to kick off the festival at 9 a.m. in the town park. There will be six musical acts this year, some of whom even performed at the Spirit of Hodges Festival last year.

For children, the festival will offer a horse ride, inflatables and a fire house for them to explore.

A group from Huntsville is returning this year to host the horseshoe pitching contest.

“They provide the prizes, so I’m not sure what those will be just yet,” Cantrell said.

If attendees get hungry, they will have the option of either Pete’s BBQ, ribs and chicken or the hotdogs and hamburgers the fire department will be selling. Cantrell said proceeds from the hotdogs and hamburgers will go toward the fire department.

This year the Car and Truck Show will be located at the softball field, closer to the rest of the festivities, instead of adjacent to the equestrian park entrance. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and judging will start at noon. Cost is $20 for a person to register their first car or truck and $10 to register an additional vehicle.

“We wanted it to be closer for attendees to enjoy it more this year,” Cantrell said.

So far, the festival promises jewelry, woodworking and clothing vendors, but Cantrell is encouraging people to still register for a vendor spot. The fire department is waiving the fee for the first booth for vendors this year, he said.

“We always have a good crowd. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the music and the food,” Cantrell said.

Admission into the event is free.
