Cancelled – Apologetics expert comes to Russellville

Update:  Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Irma, Dr. Turek will not be able to make it to Russellville Sept. 10 and 11 to speak on “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist.” Turek has family located in the direct path of the hurricane and is focusing his efforts on helping them evacuate the area. The event is being rescheduled, and the new date and time will be released at a later date.

Apologetics is a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity – and the basis of what Dr. Frank Turek will be speaking about Sept. 10-11 in Russellville.

Turek is an award-winning author and speaker and is considered an apologetics expert. He hosts a TV program and a radio program, while also maintaining a schedule of seminars that he conducts at churches, college campuses and high schools.

Sept. 10 he will speak at Russellville First Baptist Church’s 10:30 a.m. service, but that night will bring the “main event.” Turek will be the speaker for two-night seminar at Russellville High School Auditorium, Sept. 10-11 from 6-8 p.m. each night.

Jason Pierce, a member of Russellville First Baptist, is one coordinator for this presentation. He, Paul Wilbanks and Dustin Morgan got the ball rolling for the event.

“His book ‘I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist’ changed my life,” Pierce said – and he said he wants others to be influenced by Turek’s words as well.

So, a year ago he submitted an application. It was accepted, and now the event is right around the corner.

Thanks to sponsorship by Mountainview Baptist, Pleasant Hill Methodist, Union Hill Free Will Baptist, Belgreen Baptist, Divine Baptist and Russellville First Baptist, the event will be free.

Pierce said Turek will talk about many topics during each 1.5 hour-lecture, like conflicting world views, the origin and design of the universe, morality, the validity of the Bible and the controversial thought that it takes more faith to be an atheist than it does to be a Christian. At the end of each lecture, Turek will spend 30 minutes holding a question and answer session with the audience, during which he will discuss any topic that is brought to him.

“The Q&A sessions show that as Christians we have nothing to hide, and we’re not afraid of a challenge,” Pierce said.

Pierce said he believes Turek’s books and speeches are as effective as they are because they cover the why of religion rather than just the rules and what not to do.

He encouraged people of all kinds – believers, non-believers and those on the fence – to come out to the event and hear what Turek has to say.
