The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be holding its 14th Annual National Qualifying Golf Scramble June 12 at Cypress Lakes Golf Course in Muscle Shoals.
This annual scramble is used to create awareness of ministry outreach and to qualify for state and national FCA golf scrambles at Farmlinks and TPC Sawgrass golf courses.
This year’s tournament will include a prize on every hole valued at $250-$300. There will be a $1,000 Putting Contest and more than $10,000 in guaranteed cash prizes.
Cost is $350 per qualifying team and $250 for non-qualifying teams. Lunch will be provided.
FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. For more than 60 years, FCA has sought to impact the world through the influence of athletes and coaches.
Many schools in Franklin County have active FCA chapters sponsored by a coach or multiple coaches meeting before or after school. Tharptown volleyball coach Tracey Fretwell is the FCA sponsor at her school and said participation in the organization is voluntary but very active.
“We have devotionals on a biweekly basis, sometimes with guest speakers,” said Fretwell. “Our regional FCA team brings popsicles to the football, volleyball and cheerleaders and do a devotional. Hopefully, it allows an opportunity for worship for those who don’t get much of an opportunity and time to do so without ridicule. Hopefully, it helps student-athletes grow in their faith and show others at school what they stand for.”
Since 1954 the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ.
Russellville football coach Mark Heaton said likes the positive influence the organization provides for young athletes.
“FCA is always there for our student-athletes. It is a positive influence and helps them as they grow to become men and women,” said Heaton. “The FCA staff goes above and beyond for the student-athletes in Russellville and all of Northwest Alabama.”
