PC heads to Hatton

PHIL CAMPBELL — Phil Campbell football coach Bo Culver admits the losses from the last two weeks have been on the minds of his players.

Some key mistakes and mental errors cost the Bobcats a pair of games they would have likely won if those miscues had not occurred.

“We would be lying if we said it is not mentally tough,” Culver said. “(The players are handling the situation) as well as can be expected.”

He said the Bobcats have responded well and had a good practice Monday, but the real test would be Tuesday’s practice.

They will need to put the last two weeks behind them and focus on this week’s opponent, Hatton, if they want to earn their first region win of the season and get back into contention for a playoff spot.

Culver said the Hornets try to hold onto the ball and limit the time available for opposing offenses to get on the field.

The Hornets will definitely try to that this week to keep Phil Campbell quarterback Corey Alexander on the sideline as much as possible following Alexander’s performance last week. Alexander passed for 395 yards against Lamar County.

Culver said the coaching staff felt Alexander had the potential to succeed at the quarterback position and they expected him to play well.

“It’s good to throw for 395 yards,” Culver said. “But I think everybody would rather him have 15 yards and us get the win.”

Culver also said the defense needs to play better and not have as many lapses if Phil Campbell wants to reach its goal of making the playoffs.

“We can’t win consistently giving up 29 points per game,” Culver said. “We have to shore up and we’re not tackling well.”

The game begins at 7 p.m. and will be played at Hatton.
