East Franklin students host food drive

The National Junior Honor Society at East Franklin Junior High School has been busy collecting and sorting canned goods for the past few weeks as part of a holiday food drive for needy families.
Society Sponsor Tammy Jeffreys said this is the club's first major project for the year and that enough food was collected to feed at least 10 families this Thanksgiving.
"We are going to distribute the food Monday and Tuesday to families in need," Jeffreys said.
She added that teachers made lists of children in the classes that need help.
Jeffreys said there was a contest to see which class raised the most canned goods. In the K-4 division, the fourth grade were the winners. In grades 5-9, the competition was a little tighter.
"I can tell you for certain the fourth grade is the first winner, but fifth and seventh grades are really close and we won't know for a few days," Jeffrey said.
The competition ended Thursday, but it will take the club a few days to organize the food in order to have it delivered.
"Anyone can still bring food if they wish," Jeffreys said. "But, the competition is over."
Any additional food can be brought to the school's office. Excess food will be kept at the school for emergencies that may arise.
"We keep food here in case we need to send food home to families who need it," she said.
Other projects the Society will have this holiday season include a toy drive for new toys to benefit the Faith Mission Outreach.
