JA Ball: Entertaining for a good cause

The Junior Auxiliary Ball is always a fun, entertaining evening but organizers don't want those attending this year's celebration on Saturday to forget the purpose of the event.
The Junior Auxiliary is a nationwide charity organization established in the 1930s to help children. The theme for this year's ball is "Junior Auxiliary: Changing the World One Child at a Time."
In the past, the Junior Auxiliary board would select a king and queen of each ball and honor them.
In 1990, the Junior Auxiliary replaced the king and queen with the Humanitarian Award presented to a person, organization or business in recognition of the time, talent and effort contributed to the community.
The Junior Auxiliary donates $1,000 to the charity of the recipient's choice. This year's nominee will be honored at the ball at Northwood Country Club.
The pre-ball party begins at 7:30 p.m. with food, beverages and music. Dr. Zarr's Amazing Funk Monster will take the stage beginning at 9 p.m.
The black tie-optional event is open to anyone 21 and older. Tickets are $100 a couple in advance and are available by calling 681-9999 or 681-8893; tickets also can be bought at the door for $125 a couple.
All money raised from the event will help fund such projects as eye exams for school children, school supplies for needy children, grants for teachers and free books through the Reading is Fundamental program.
Besides entertainment and socializing, the ball will feature an abundance of food catered by the Northwood Country Club. The menu will feature a selection of Mexican, Oriental and Hawaiian dishes.
A full assortment of desserts including cheesecakes and truffles will be served in The Grill at the club.
