East Mississippi State Hospital will hold a ground-breaking ceremony today at 2 p.m. for construction of its Reginald P. White Nursing Home Facility.
Betty Moffett, public information director of the hospital, said the new building project will be done on an 18-acre tract of land owned by the hospital off Old Eighth Street Road near the Jaycee Soccer Complex.
The project will replace three buildings built in the early 1950s that currently make up the nursing home on the hospital's main campus.
The hospital provides psychiatric and substance abuse services in addition to its nursing home, which cares for former patients as well as others who meet specific admission criteria.
The $11.5 million project was partially funded in 2001 by the Mississippi Legislature. The project includes construction of two 120-bed single story buildings.
Architectural, Engineering and Surveying Ltd. of Meridian is the architectural firm for the project. W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Co. of Philadelphia is the building contractor.
Dr. Ramiro J. Martinez is director of the hospital, which is publicly funded and is operated by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held at the Jaycee Soccer Complex on Old Eighth Street Road. For more information call Moffett's office at 481-1241.
