Work has begun on the new Hudson's store on North Frontage Road and company officials hope to open there by mid-January.
Workers nailed plywood, swept floors and painted walls Tuesday inside the old Service Merchandise building on North Frontage Road.
Soldinie is overseeing the renovation, which will include dividing the store into two parts one for Hudson's Treasure Hunt and the other for Dirt Cheap.
Hudson's Salvage Inc. officials were forced to find a new location last month after they were unable to work a new lease with Paul Broadhead Interests for their current Value Fair Mall location.
Hudson's and its sister store, Dirt Cheap, have been there since 1997.
Rick Shadix, Hudson's president, then told his Meridian employees that both stores would close by the end of the year if a new building was not found.
Shadix said his company eventually struck a deal with Broadhead, who also owns the old Service Merchandise building.
Both stores will close their Value Fair locations on Dec. 24 and reopen in the new North Frontage Road location by mid-January.
Shadix said the new Dirt Cheap will double in size, forcing his company to hire about 30 new employees. The new Hudson's Treasure Hunt will be about the same size.
After the stores close Dec. 24, Shadix said his employees will do an inventory of the products and then transfer it to the new store.
