Quitman boys, Heidelberg girls take tourney wins

Heidelberg and Quitman split the two early games in the final day of the 2002 Frazier/Yarbrough Tournament at MCC on Saturday night.
The Lady Oilers jumped out to an early lead and held off Quitman to take a 38-30 victory in the first game of the night.
The Panthers then played well under pressure in the final minutes to hold on to a 53-47 win in the second contest.

Quitman jumped out to a lead in the first half and held on to take the 53-47 victory over the Oilers.
The Panthers played very solid defense and rebounded well to take the win and improve to 6-6 on the year. They will play a big district game at West Jones on Monday.
Heidelberg opened the game with a 5-2 lead over Quitman, but the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to take a seven-point lead with just over three minutes left in the first. The Oilers were able to pull back to within two at 14-12 at the end of the quarter.
The lead remained about four throughout the second quarter, but Heidelberg cut the lead to two points with a basket by Jessie Yates with 21 seconds left.
Quitman came back down the court and got a three-point play from Prince Trotter to take a 25-20 lead into half.
Heidelberg was able to cut into the lead and make the score 34-33 after three quarters.
The Oilers then tied the game at 40 with 6:08 left to play. The Panthers responded with a 10-3 run to stretch the lead back out.
Heidelberg cut the lead down to 51-47 with 1:34 left to play, but could not get any closer as the Panthers held on for the 53-47 victory.
Jonathan McCarty led Quitman with 19 points while Trotter added in 11. Yates led Heidelberg with 15 points and Jordan Payne finished with 12.

Heidelberg held off a charge by the Lady Panthers in the fourth quarter to take a 38-30 win in the opener on Saturday night.
Quitman held 6-2 lead after a low-scoring first quarter. Heidelberg then went on a 12-3 run in the final two minutes of the second quarter to take a 19-14 lead into halftime.
The Lady Oilers then outscored Quitman 10-3 in the third quarter to make the lead 29-17 with one quarter left to play.
Quitman started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run and then got three baskets from Shaquilla Mack to cut the lead down to 32-29.
Princess Bender responded with a bucket for the Lady Oilers to make the score 34-29. Quitman was only able to make one free throw in the final three minutes of the game and Bender scored three points and April Baker scored one to secure the 38-30 win.
Bender finished the game with 13 points to lead Heidelberg. Kemonica McGee scored nine points for Quitman and Mack added eight.
Heidelberg will host Choctaw Central in a key Division 5-3A game on Monday.
