Three people were sent to a local hospital Saturday after a car traveling the wrong way in the westbound lane of Interstate 20/59 near Meridian apparently struck two eastbound cars.
Sgt. Curtis C. Moss of the Mississippi Highway Patrol said alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. Moss said the names and conditions of the injured motorists were unavailable.
The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. about a half mile east of the I-20/59 split.
The man who drove the wrong way was driving a tan car with a handicapped Alabama license plate. Moss said the man's name was unavailable.
The wreck backed up traffic in the westbound lane of I-20/59 for about about 30 minutes as volunteer firefighters, law officers, and others tried to sort through the damage.
Moss said the wreck could have been worse.
