AUBURN UNIVERSITY Marie Nicole Wood of Auburn has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a ceremony this fall at Auburn University.
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization. Founded in 1994, it recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically.
The society was established on the principle that with scholarship comes a responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service.
Marie Nicole is the daughter of Hazel Wood, formerly of Meridian.
John Phillip Garrett, Brandon Wayne Harper and Allison Brooks Trammell have been selected as the 2002-2003 Mabel and S. Carl Merritt Scholarship recipients for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College.
These $1,000 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation. Mabel and Carl Merritt, long-time MCC patrons, established this scholarship in 1994.
A sophomore in the University Transfer Program, Garrett is a graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School. He is a President's List Scholar and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international scholastic society for two-year college students. Garrett plans to pursue a degree in engineering after graduation from MCC. He is a member of the Eagle baseball team.
Harper is a recent graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School, where he was president of the Beta Club and vice president of the Student Council. He was selected for Who's Who Among American High School Students and the National Honor Roll. Harper received the All-American Scholar Award and the U.S. National Leadership Merit Award. He plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
Trammell is a graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School where she was named to the National Honor Society and was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. She was selected as an All-American Scholar and received the National Merit Award. A freshman entering the University Transfer Program, Trammell plans to study psychology and business management. She works part-time at a photography studio and helps in the nursery of her church.
Susan Busby and Andy Thomas are the 2002-2003 L.O. Todd Memorial Scholarship recipients for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College. These $600 scholarships are funded through the MCC Foundation.
Thomas, a graduate of Clarkdale High School, is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program studying accounting. As a freshman at MCC, he was tapped for Phi Theta Kappa, the international scholastic society for two-year college students. Thomas serves as a student recruiter, sings in his church choir and volunteers with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Busby, a non-traditional student, is a sophomore majoring in health information technology. The mother of four adult children, she is a Dean's List Scholar. Busby is a nursery teacher and social chairman at her church. She graduated from Quitman High School.
Seventy-seven Meridian Community College students received certificates and diplomas during summer commencement exercises. The graduates included:
