The book salutes notable people including explorers, educators, political leaders, businessmen, farmers and a long list of musicians, writers and artist.
Akin and Bolton begin their book with Mississippi's roots, including its secession from the Union and involvement in the Civil War.
It also touches on modern-day Mississippi, focusing on Meridian's Grand Opera House which has a full-page color photo the Neshoba County Fair and the Canton Flea Market.
One chapter looks at the state's cultural heritage.
About the authors: Akin, a graduate of Samford University, has reviewed several books about Mississippi including an extensive essay in "The Mississippi Quarterly."
Bolton received his doctoral degree in history from Duke University.
He is currently chairman and professor of the Department of History and co-director of the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg
