Johnny Wayne “Chubb” Childers coached football at Vina High School from 1967-1972, accumulating a record of 28-28-1 during that time. Friday night, Vina High School honored Childers by adding his name to their football field.
Franklin-Hester Stadium will now be known as Franklin-Hester Stadium and Childers Field.
The Childers family was on-hand at Vina’s homecoming pep rally Thursday night for the unveiling of the new sign that would be affixed to the scoreboard.
“It was an amazing thing,” said Pat Cochran, Vina’s Board of Education member. “A lot of planning and organization went into getting this done to honor Coach Childers.”
Childers’ teams scored 669 points while giving up 581 points while he served as head coach. After Childers retired from coaching, he and good friend L.V. Russell never missed their grandchildren playing any sport they were involved in.
“We would like to thank those who made this possible for honoring someone we loved very much,” said a family spokesperson.
