Council talks Fourth of July

In a short and sweet meeting Monday night, the Russellville City Council approved a purchase for the parks and recreation department and appointed councilman Gary Cummings in charge of Russellville’s Fourth of July festivities, among other agenda items.

The council approved the purchase of a used 2013 Honda Four-Trax Rancher in the amount of $4,434 from Shoals Outdoor Sports for the Russellville Parks and Recreation Department, with an additional $565 one-year warranty.

“it’s something we have been needing for a long time,” said Mayor David Grissom. The vehicle will be used to pull the drag to prepare the baseball fields; prior to this, the department has been using a lawnmower to pull drag.

Though Independence Day is five months away, the council discussed the activities that will be held for the city’s annual celebration, with the primary topics of discussion being to hire Alabama Pyrotechnics to set off the fireworks again this year, as well as to put Cummings in charge of arrangements.

The fireworks display will come in at a cost of $10,000, which is the minimum order the pyrotechnics company will accept.

“I felt like they did a good job last year,” Cummings said.
