Winter weather causes blood shortage

by Staff Reports

Last week’s winter storms that rolled through the area are still impacting the region’s blood supply, and LifeSouth Community Blood Centers continues to face a critical shortage of Type O blood.

“We appreciate all of the people who came out to donate last week, especially those who had to brave the cold and ice,” said LifeSouth Vice President of Operations J.B. Bowles. “Those donors made a difference, but unfortunately we are still in emergency need of Type O and need help immediately.”

Type O-positive blood can be used by anyone with a positive blood type, which is about 85 percent of the population. Type O-negative blood is always needed because any patient can use it in an emergency. And for those with Type-O negative blood, that is their only option if they need a transfusion.

Donors must be at least 17 years old or 16 with parental permission and must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is also required.

“The good news is that spring is coming, and that will help, but blood donors are needed today,” Bowles said.

For information on blood drives in your community call LifeSouth toll-free at 888-795-2707 or visit lifesouth.org.
