Scam targeting families of murder victims
The Alabama Crime Victims’ Compensation Commission learned that a family member of a homicide victim was contacted by an individual who claimed to be an employee of the Commission.
The family member was told that he had been approved for $7,000 for funeral expenses, but would have to provide a green dot card money card from a drug store or convenience store for $259 before he could receive the crime victims’ compensation benefits.
The Commission will never request that a claimant provide money in order to receive crime victims’ compensation benefits.
The caller also requested the bank account and routing number of the family member to transfer the crime victims’ compensation benefits electronically. The Commission never sends crime victims’ compensation benefits electronically.
If you are suspicious of a caller who identifies himself as a Commission employee, hang up and call the Commission toll-free at 1-800-541-9388.
