Restaurant linked to salmonella outbreak

The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed on Friday they are investigating a possible salmonella outbreak originating from a Russellville restaurant.

According to officials, El Patron Tex-Mex Restaurant, located on U.S. 43 in Russellville, was identified as the common source for at least three people who were hospitalized and had positive salmonella cultures.

Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Karen Landers stated that nine additional cases are being investigated.

Other cases of gastrointestinal illness were also being evaluated.

According to officials, the ADPH was made aware of the situation last Wednesday.

The restaurant has been closed during the investigation.

On Friday, a sign posted outside El Patron stated, “Due to pluming [sic] problems in the kitchen we will be closed till further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Symptoms of salmonella include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Symptoms usually occur within sic to 72 hours after exposure.

Officials said the restaurant will remain closed until the investigation is complete and they have been cleared by the health department.
