Local man arrested in stabbing incident
RED BAY – A Red Bay man was arrested on Saturday after authorities said he stabbed another man during a drug-related altercation.
Shawn Patrick Burke, 50, 1142 4th St. SE, Red Bay, was arrested for second-degree assault, Red Bay Police Chief Janna Jackson said.
According to Jackson, the incident took place at a residence in the 600 block of 7th Ave. SE in Red Bay at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
Jackson said Burke allegedly got into an altercation with 38-year-old Jose Gonzalez, Jr., 38, of Red Bay, over drugs.
Jackson said according to reports, Burke stabbed Gonzalez twice with a small knife – once in the side and once in the arm.
Jackson said the injuries were serious but non-life threatening.
Once they were alerted to the incident, Jackson said officers were dispatched to the scene where they were able to locate Burke, who had fled from the scene but was still in the area.
Jackson said officers noticed Burke also had what appeared to be a stab wound but he later confessed to stabbing himself.
“He actually stabbed himself to make it appear that he had stabbed Mr. Gonzalez in self-defense,” Jackson said.
Gonzalez was transported to the hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.
Burke was taken into custody and transferred to the Franklin County Jail where he is being held on a $7,500 bond.
