Work continues at park
PHIL CAMPBELL – Work is ongoing at the Phil Campbell Community Center Park in hopes that residents will be able to enjoy the new features by the time the weather warms back up.
Phil Campbell Mayor Steve Bell said they hope to have the work at the park completed by mid-spring.
“The work on the splash pad has begun and crews are also working on the picnic tables and the playground that will be featured at the park as well.”
Bell said the splash pad at the community center park will take the place of the old swimming pool that was severely damaged by the April 27, 2011 tornado.
“When we were deciding what we wanted to do once we started to repair and rebuild this area by the community center that was hit so hard, community members and city leaders expressed interest in putting in a splash pad instead of another pool,” Bell said.
“There are several fiscal advantages because there is less cost associated with a splash pad and there is no need to hire life guards.
“But really, the times are just changing. Children and families these days like going to splash pads because they are different and fun, so I think this will be a great thing for our town.”
Bell said it would also be a good source of entertainment, especially in the spring and summer months, for the town’s residents.
“I think the closest splash pad to us is the one at Gattmann Park in Muscle Shoals,” he said.
“Instead of our residents having to drive all the way to the Shoals, they can enjoy something fun to do right here at home.”
Bell said the splash pad, playground, pavilion, picnic tables and charcoal grills at the community center park would all be a compliment to the Phil Campbell Memorial Park downtown.
“The community center park will be a little bigger and will be able to accommodate larger groups who are wanting to get together,” he said.
“Both parks are great additions to the city and offer some really good options for community gatherings and entertainment right here in Phil Campbell.”
