Belgreen ninth grade girls win Bulldog Classic

On Friday night in the Bulldog Classic, the Belgreen ninth grade girls defeated East Franklin 51-6 in the semi-final game and secure a spot in the championship game on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs led 18-2 after one quarter. Nicole Borden scored six of her 14 points; Shellie Barber scored all five of her points and Peyton Bingham chipped in two in the first.

At halftime Belgreen led 33-6. Kaley Vadiver scored seven of her 12 points in the second quarter.

East Franklin failed to score in the second half as Callie Barber added all eight of her points in the second half and Cortny Williams had six of her 10 points in the second half for the final tally.

East Franklin went on to win the consolation game 20-12 over Vina.

On Saturday, Red Bay defeated Phillips in the second semi-final game to set up a showdown between Belgreen and Red Bay in the championship game where Belgreen would defeat Red Bay by a score of 40-31.

The Lady Bulldogs would take a 12-3 lead in the first. Shelli Barber, Johnna Oliver, Callie Barber and Kaley Vandiver all chipped in two points each in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Brooke Shewbart scored six of her 17 points for Lady Tigers. However, Belgreen increased its lead to 23-10 as Cortny Williams chipped in four and Ana Castillo added two.

Each team would score six points each in the third period. Shewbart scored nine in the fourth, but Red Bay would come up short as Nicole Borden continued to dominate underneath the basket as she scored ten of her 20 points in the final frame to give the Lady Bulldogs’ ninth grade team a victory and extend their winning streak to 18-0.

The ninth grade Lady Bulldogs will play Hackleburg on Jan. 7.
