Russellville Public Library hosting first Zombie Walk on Oct. 26
With the wildly popular AMC TV series The Walking Dead garnering legions of fans across the country, it comes as no surprise that the show, and others like it, have created a zombie frenzy that would excite even the undead.
The Russellville Public Library is joining in on the zombie craze this year by hosting the 1st Annual Zombie Walk on Oct. 26.
Library employee Ashley Cummins said the days festivities would kick-off at 10:30 a.m. at the library with a zombie make-up clinc that will be offered al day, a zombie walk instructional class at 12 p.m. hosted by Tristin Pierce from Flatline Radio, and a zombie movie marathon.
The main event – a zombie parade through downtown Russellville starting at the library and ending at the Franklin County Courthouse – will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Following the parade there will be a performance by the Russellville High School Color Guard on the courthouse steps, and a brain eating contest, a costume competition and other activities back at the library.
“October is Ten Read Month and when we started brainstorming ideas for activities the library could do, we came up with the idea for a zombie walk,” Cummins said.
“There are many other libraries that have hosted zombie walks and the zombie theme is very big right now in movies, TV and books.
“Plus, it just seemed like something really fun to do close to Halloween and also to pay tribute to Russellville native Sonequa Martin Green who is an actress on The Walking Dead.”
Those who wish to participate in the 1st Annual Zombie Walk will need to pre-register for the event by no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 26.
Cummins said participation in the zombie walk is free, but each participant must sign a waiver in order to actually walk. Registration forms can be accessed from the Russellville Public Library Facebook page, the 1st Annual Zombie Walk Russellville Alabama event page, or at the Russellville Public Library located at 110 E. Lawrence St. in Russellville.
Cummins said T-shirts, novelty items and food will be for sale the day of the event with proceeds going to benefit the Friends of the Russellville Public Library organization.
