FLORENCE – Vina head coach James Pharr was disappointed with Friday’s 34-0 loss to Shoals Christian, but pleased with the tenacity of the Red Devils.

Pharr said the Red Devils played hard right up until the final whistle.

“They showed a lot of class,” he said. “We’re real young and we’ve got a lot of work to do. But we’re getting there. We hope to play a lot better next week.”

The Flame scored on its first possession of the game when quarterback Daniel Wood ran five yards up the middle with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Dustin Covington ran 3 yards for the Flame’s next score with 9:34 left in the half. The Red Devils blocked the PAT.

Shoals Christian scored with six minutes remaining in the half, then again with 10:06 left in the third quarter.

Shoals Christian’s final points came with 2:38 remaining in the third quarter when Wood ran 48 yards on a busted pass play.

Each time the Flame would score, Pharr would call the Red Devils together and encourage them to continue to play hard.

In the fourth quarter, the Red Devils moved the ball to the Flame 3 yard line before turning it over on a fumble with 9:09 remaining in the game.

The loss drops the Red Devils to 0-3 for the season. It was Shoals Christian’s first win.
