Former UA athletic director Mal Moore passes away

Former University of Alabama athletics director Mal Moore cast a large shadow over a program that he became synonymous with following a lifetime of service.

Moore died Saturday at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., as the result of a pulmonary condition. He was 73.

Moore was a backup quarterback at Alabama from 1958-1962 and served as an assistant coach for legendary Paul “Bear Bryant” from 1964-1982. He later returned to Alabama and served as Gene Stallings’ offensive coordinator from 1990-1993 before moving into administration.

He was named the director of athletics in 1999 and went on to lead a $220 million fundraising campaign that led to Alabama becoming one of the strongest athletic departments in the country.
