Safeplace hosts fundraiser

It may be hard to imagine a time when there were no services for victims of family violence. But it wasn’t until the late 1970s that shelters for women and children and programs for those suffering in domestic violence were opened in the state of Alabama.
Safeplace, Inc. opened in June of 1981 and filled to capacity on the first night. Since that time, it has grown into an organization that has helped more than 50,000 people throughout the six counties of Northwest Alabama.
In celebration of 31 years of services and success, the organization is preparing for the third annual Liberty Luncheon to be held June 14 from 12 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Marriott Conference Center in Florence.
A time to rejoice over past success, the Liberty Luncheon is also the agency’s major fundraiser for the year. Board members hope the community will embrace the cause of promoting healthy relationships and support the event to show a united front against family violence.
According to Executive Director Rachel Cabaniss, Safeplace services are outpacing the funding required to meet the need at a time when grants and other funds have been cut.  The fundraiser is crucial to the agency’s ability to maintain all of its services. With Alabama ranking second in the nation for the rate of women killed by men, it is evident the services are vital for local families.  This event is an opportunity for community supporters to become involved in the effort to promoting healthy relationships and provide safe places for families.
Persons interested in supporting the cause can reserve their seat at no cost. Safeplace will ask all attendees to make a personally meaningful contribution on the day of the event. Event sponsors are needed. Event sponsorship levels are $1,000 to reserve a table, $3,000 to become a Liberty Luncheon Sponsor and $5,000 to become a Safeplace Investor. Event sponsors are asked to invite others they know have a heart for victims of abuse to fill their table. Last year’s celebration raised over $40,000, which helped Safeplace to meet their annual budget.
To make reservations or request an invitation, please e-mail Safeplace at safeplaceinc@gmail.com or call the administrative office at 256-767-3076. Please reserve you seat by June 7, 2012.
