Fabianke promotes fitness in Red Bay
At Monday’s meeting of the Red Bay City Council, Red Bay resident Rosalyn Fabianke gave an update on the progress made by the Alabama Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness and Sports, which is a commission she was appointed to last year to serve as the representative of the Fourth Congressional District.
Fabianke reminded the council that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and that many municipalities across the state are planning activities to participate.
Along those same lines, Fabianke said she was able to select two schools from her region to participate in the “Wee Can Fight Obesity” program and she chose Red Bay and Vina schools.
“This program targets third grade students and it’s actually a technological way of involving children in fitness,” Fabianke said. “It’s not meant to replace other physical education programs; it’s just there to offer an alternative.”
Fabianke said the program utilizes the Nintendo Wii Fit Plus Bundle provided by the Alabama Sports Festival and that children will participate in the program at least two days per week even though most children want to do it everyday.
After eight weeks, the schools are able to keep the equipment to be implemented in the regular physical education program.
“Alabama is among the top five states with the least amount of physical activity and that’s something we hope to change,” Fabianke said. “I’m glad we can get schools in this area involved in this program and I think they can serve as a model for other schools in the future.”
