Four former inmates could seek $5 million each
Four former female inmates of the Russellville City Jail have filed notices of claim with the Russellville city clerk’s office expressing their intent to sue the city.
The notices state that each woman is seeking $5 million in damages.
According to legal documents obtained by the Times on Friday, each of the women filed claims listing “assault, battery, outrage, false imprisonment and violations of her civil rights” as reasons for the potential suits.
Notices of claims are required to be filed before lawsuits are levied against government bodies.
The claims go on to say they are filed against the “city of Russellville, Alabama, through its officers, agents, employees and/or other individuals authorized by the city of Russellville, Alabama, to act on its behalf.”
Russellville attorneys John McReynolds and Jeff Bowling filed the motions this week.
“These were filed as part of an investigation of a suspended Russellville police officer,” McReynolds said.
“We believe there are more women who have been victims also and we are looking for those individuals who may be witnesses in this case.”
McReynolds said the allegations involve the inappropriate touching of some female inmates at the city jail.
The case is currently under investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation as well.
