Carmichael left Democrats because
of conscience'

By By William F. West / community editor
Dec. 5, 2002
State Sen. Videt Carmichael of Meridian said he left the Democratic Party because of conscience.
Carmichael, 52, a consultant and former educator, became a Republican in May.
Carmichael said he's been a conservative from day one and that the national Democratic Party is too liberal.
Carmichael said that includes a pro-life stance on the abortion issue.
Carmichael said most of the reaction to his party switch to has been positive, but he acknowledged getting negative responses.
He said he understands those who believe he should have stayed with the party in which he was elected until the end of his term.
Party switching has attracted interest in Mississippi with this week's switch of Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck from the Democrats and speculation about whether state Sen. Terry Burton, D-Newton, will follow suit.
